This intense and genre-spanning work was a personal mission of his to create something containing the character of Detroit but with a sound all to itself. The concept for the album came from a period of subconscious self-exploration while traveling through remote regions of the Peruvian Amazon. The progression of the album tells the story of facing his fears, moving through them, and turning their power into personal strength.
FRANCOIS DILLINGER presents his second-ever LP ‘ICOSAHEDRONE’ with a style that is electro in structure, but with a techno and industrial soul. It brings together evolving, organically influenced sound design with heavy drums and hypnotic basslines to create machine music that feels very much alive. The vinyl version contains three original tracks from the complete LP, alongside three remarkable remixes.
In ‘Navigating the Swamp’, looping drones and sparse melodies are embraced by surging bass as the song takes you on a journey through low hanging branches and pitch black water. ‘Sit and Wait’ gives you drums and delayed acid loops that beat your chest as you welcome the arrival of your deepest fears into your conscious mind. Lastly, ‘Dream Thief’ approaches like a distant storm, crashing thunder to shake loose the clouds blanketing your dreams, stealing them from the grips of your self-doubt.
The vinyl release is accompanied by remixes from Keith ‘K1’ Tucker, Detroit’s Filthiest, and Diffuse Reality’s own Squaric. Each chooses to take the minimal aesthetic of the original and add vocals to the mix, giving them an even deeper message. Detroit electro royalty Keith Tucker redefined ‘Dream Thief’ with K1’s classic vocoder technique alongside dystopian pads and a melodic bassline that grinds away even the sharpest of edges. Another Detroit mainstay, Detroit’s Filthiest adds a Vader-esque vocal refrain to ‘Sit and Wait’ alongside string stabs and phrenetic drums sure to evaporate the sweat off any dancefloor. Finally, Squaric adds some nuclear radiation to ‘Navigating the Swamp’, ratcheting up the tempo to guarantee complete obliteration of your ego.
The equipment used at the time of recording this album included: Elektron Digitone, Behringer Deepmind 12, Malekko Manther, Elektron Digitakt, Elektron Analog Four, Roland Se-02, Moog DFAM, Jomox MBase 01, and a Dread:box NYX—all arranged and mixed in Ableton Live. The entirety of the album was created at his Detroit studio over the span of 30 days during the brutally cold winter of 2019.
